How to Conceive Using the Shettles Method
May 25th, 2010 by Christine
Dr. Landrum Shettles is a pioneer in the “gender selection” field of pregnancy and conception. In the 1960s he wrote the landmark book “How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby”, which is still a major source for information regarding gender selection and conception.
If you’re looking to determine how to conceive a boy or how to conceive a girl specifically, you’d do rather well to check out Dr. Shettles’ book and understand his basic concepts.
To summarize the theories detailed in his book, one needs to understand that the male sperm determines the sex of the baby. If the sperm that fertilizes the egg is Y chromosome, the baby will be a boy. If it is X chromosome, then the baby will be a girl. Most people don’t realize this but the X and Y chromosomes are quite different from each other in many fundamental ways.
Y chromosomes are smaller and faster, though much less capable of surviving the acidic nature of a woman’s body than their X chromosome counterparts. X chromosomes are much larger and slower than Y chromosomes, though they are particularly well suited to live for a significant amount of time within the woman’s body.
Dr. Shettles has taken this background information on sperm capabilities and applied it to gender selection. The application is this: if you desire a female child, you should have intercourse roughly 3 days before ovulation and then abstain from sex until after ovulation. He also would advise you having sex in a position that only allows for shallow penetration. The concept is that if you’re trying to conceive a girl, you want the Y chromosome sperm to die off before they can fertilize the egg.
Since they don’t last as long in the acidic environment, having shallow penetration forces them to travel a longer way, and having sex a few days before ovulation would require them to stay alive much longer than they are normally capable of. This should allow the X chromosome sperm the best opportunity to fertilize the egg.
Conversely, if you want to conceive a boy, you should have sex as close as possible to the point of ovulation, and you should also aim for a sexual position that allows for the deepest penetration possible.
Please keep in mind that using these methods only increases your chances of conceiving a certain sex – it is by no means a certainty. These concepts make logical and medical sense though, and they are certainly worth considering and studying.
